Level 1 Award in Food Safety in Catering
Is this qualification for me?
The Level 1 Award in Food Safety in Catering qualification is for individuals that are either preparing for or supporting a current position within a low-risk role, where there is an element of food handling.
Bar workers, waiting staff, health care workers, kitchen porters and stock room staff will all benefit from this qualification and will promote safe practices in the workplace.
By law, food business operators must ensure that food handlers receive the appropriate supervision and training in food hygiene. The training of food handlers is the key to profitability and high standards of food safety is to ensure their competency.
What does the qualification cover?
Topics include:
- Understanding personal responsibilities for food safety in a catering environment
- Understanding the importance of personal hygiene in a catering environment
- Understanding the importance of keeping work areas clean and hygienic in a catering environment
- Understanding how to keep food safe in a catering environment
How long will it take me?
The qualification is designed to take half a day to complete, when delivered face to face.

How will I be assessed?
You are assessed by a 15 question multiple choice examination. Successful learners will need to achieve at least 60% (9 out of 15).
Are there any entry requirements?
It is expected that learners have a minimum understanding of Level 1 in Literacy and Numeracy.
